　作品は、日清戦争の黄海海戦参加時の「高千穂」を描いたもの。同艦には、動物にまつわる逸話が残されており、その1つがこの作品のテーマである、檣頂に鷹が舞い降りた逸話です。明治27年、黄海海戦に勝利した日本艦隊の第一遊撃部隊に属していた同艦に、1羽の鷹が飛来し檣頂に止まりました。神武天皇と所縁深い名を持つ同艦への鷹の飛来は、まさに金鵄の飛来を思わせる吉兆と喜ばれました。この鷹は、後に明治天皇に献上されて「高千穂」と名付けられ、新宿御苑で飼育されました。
『幕末明治大正回顧八十年史第八巻』には、この鷹が野元二等兵曹に捕らえられた際の写真が掲載されています。
東大総合研究博物館が関わるIMTの所蔵品に、この「高千穂」と推測されるハヤブサの剥製があります。

This work depicts Takachiho during the Battle of the Yellow Sea in the Sino-Japanese War. She has left behind anecdotes about animals, one of which is the theme of this work, the story of the eagle that landed on the top of the mast. After the Japanese side won the Battle of the Yellow Sea in 1894, a hawk flew over her and perched on her mast. The arrival of the hawk on the ship, whose name is closely associated with the first Emperor Jinmu, was considered a good omen, reminiscent of the arrival of the golden steeplejack in Japanese mythology. This hawk was later presented to Emperor Meiji and named "Takachiho" and bred in the Shinjuku Imperial Garden. The University of Tokyo's IMT collection includes a stuffed falcon, which is presumed to be the "Takachiho".
