本作には、「大和」以外に主役がいます。それは「雪風」（画面中央の陽光が指す艦）です。「雪風」は陽炎型駆逐艦19隻の中で唯一終戦まで生き残った艦です。スラバヤ沖海戦から沖縄特攻まで主要な作戦に参加しながら大きな損傷を受ける事なく活躍した「幸運艦」でした。その一方で、「大和」や「武藏」、航空母艦「信濃」の最期を看取った艦でもあります。戦後、「雪風」は復員輸送艦として15回の復員輸送任務を遂行し、１万3千人以上を運び、その後は戦時賠償艦として中華民国へ引き渡され、「丹陽」として激動の歴史に立合いました。昭和44（1969）年夏に「丹陽」は台風により座礁し、解体されました。昭和46 （1971）年12月8日、中華民国政府よりその舵輪と錨のみが返還されました（不沈艦生涯（新版）203-204頁参考）。タイトルの「26311208」は神武紀元2631（1971）年12月8日を意味する数字で、「雪風」がようやく役目を終え日本に戻って来た日を指しています。つまりこの作品に描かれた艦隊は艦たちの魂で、最後に合流した「雪風」の魂と共に、果たすことの出来なかった任務を遂げるべく沖縄へと向かう様子を描いているわけです。奇しくもその翌年、沖縄は日本に返還されることになるのです。

In this work there is a protagonist besides the Yamato. That is the Yukikaze (touched by a sunbeam in the center of the picture). The Yukikaze was the only one of 19 Kagero class destroyers to survive the war. From the Battle of the Java Sea to the Yamato’s last sortie she was in many battles without receiving significant damage, and was known as a lucky ship. She was present in the final actions of the Yamato and Musashi, and the aircraft carrier Shinano. After the war, the Yukikaze was a repatriation ship. She made 15 trips, bringing more than 13, 000 Japanese back to the Home Islands. Afterwards, she was awarded to The Republic of China as a war prize, renamed the Tan Yang, and had a very adventurous history there. In the summer of Showa 44 (1969) she grounded in a typhoon and was scrapped. On December 8, Showa 46, (1971) the ship’s wheel and anchor were returned to Japan. (See Life of the unsinkable ship (New Edition), pages 203-204.) The title 26311208 refers to the Imperial Year 2631 (1971), December 8, when the Yukikaze returned to Japan. In this work, these ships went off to save Okinawa for Japan, but could not complete their mission. It is as if their spirits could not rest until reunited with the spirit of Yukikaze. Miraculously, the next year, Okinawa was returned to Japan.
