　「朝日」は、敷島型戦艦の2番艦です。明治33年7月31日にイギリスのクライド・バンクのジョン・ブラウン社で竣工しました。日露戦争では、主力戦艦の1隻として旅順口攻撃・旅順港閉塞作戦・黄海海戦・日本海海戦といった主要な作戦に、第一線で参加しました。第一次世界大戦後の大正10年9月1日附で、海防艦に類別変更。大正12年、ワシントン海軍軍縮条約に伴い練習特務艦となり、その後、潜水艦救難艦に改造されました。大東亜戦争には工作艦として参加。昭和17年5月26日、シンガポールから日本本土へ帰投中に、アメリカ軍の潜水艦から魚雷攻撃を受け、沈没しました。
　この作品は、うねりのある日本海上を、僚艦と共に黒煙を噴きながら哨戒行動中の「朝日」（明治37年時）の雄姿を描いたものです。日本初の軍神として崇敬を集めた廣瀬武夫中佐は、日露戦争時に「朝日」に水雷長として乗り組んでおり、杉野兵曹とはこの時に親交を深めました。

The Asahi was the second ship of the Shikishima class. She was completed by John Brown company at Clydebank in Great Britain on July 31, 1900. In the Russo-Japanese War, as one of the main battleships, it participated in the front line in major operations such as the attack on the Port of Arthur, the blockade of Port Arthur, the Battle of the Yellow Sea, and the Battle of Tsushima. In 1921 she was reclassified as a coastal defense ship. In 1923 with the stipulations of the Washington Naval Treaty she was reclassified as a training ship, and later modified as a submarine rescue ship. During The Greater East Asian War, she served as a repair ship. On May 26th, 1942, on her way back to Japan from Singapore, she was torpedoed by an American submarine and sunk.
This work depicts the Asahi on patrol in the Sea of Japan in 1904, a majestic scene in the swollen waters of the Sea of Japan with her consort ships, blowing black smoke as they navigate the fleet. The first person to be venerated as a War God in Japan, Lieutenant Commander Hirose Takeo, served on her as a torpedo officer, at this time petty officer Sugino was his close friend.
