「利根」は水上機の搭載能力に優れた重巡洋艦です。真珠湾攻撃に先んじて索敵機を飛ばし、ハワイ上空の気象と湾内の偵察を行ったことを始め、様々な作戦で索敵・偵察任務を遂行するなど、大東亜戦争序盤より艦隊の眼としての役割を果たしました。戦況が悪化していく中でも生き延び、内地に戻されました。昭和20（1945）年3月19日、海軍兵学校練習艦として呉に停泊中、米艦載機の空襲を受けて損傷し、の海岸付近に移動しましたが、7月24日の呉軍港空襲時に再度被弾しました。更に7月28日の空襲時にも爆弾6発を受け、翌29日に大破着底し終戦を迎えました。
　本作品は、捷一号作戦時、シブヤン海に入る直前の栗田艦隊の第二部隊（戦艦「金剛」を中心とする輪形陣）を描いたものです。「利根」に後続する艦は駆逐「磯風」、右舷側に進むのは戦艦「榛名」、その前方奥は重巡洋艦「鈴谷」、両艦のさらに奥に小さく見えるのが駆逐艦「雪風」です。
　平成28（2016）年に利根の艦内神社の分霊元である香取神宮で「重巡洋艦利根慰霊顕彰祭」が斎行された際、この作品を奉納しました。

The Tone was a specially designed reconnaissance float plane heavy cruiser. From the start of the war, when her planes scouted the weather and Pearl Harbor anchorage, her scout aircraft played a very important role in the Greater East Asian War (the Pacific War). As the war situation worsened, she was brought back to home waters. In the March 19, Showa 20 (1945) air raid on Kure, while serving as a school ship for the Japanese Naval Academy, she was damaged, and then anchored off Nomi Island. In the air raid of July 28 on Kure she received six bomb hits. On the 29th she grounded and her career was over.
This work shows her in the Operation Sho-Go 1, just before entering the Sibuyan Sea as part of Admiral Kurita’s fleet, in the Second Squadron (centered on the Kongo). Aft of the Kongo is the destroyer Isokaze, to starboard is the battleship Haruna, forward of her in the distance is the cruiser Suzuya. Beyond that we can just barely see the destroyer Yukikaze.
In Heisei 28 (2016), as part of a ceremony for the souls of the Tone crew, this work was dedicated to the Katori Jingu Shrine, which had shared its patron deity with the shrine onboard the heavy cruiser Tone.
