“Exchanging Salutes -Battleship DKM Scharnhorst 1939-” 「
The Scharnhorst was a battleship built after World War I, and the lead ship of the Scharnhorst class. Although she is often perceived as a "cursed ship" due to a hoax circulated in the 1950s, she was a decorated ship during World War II, serving in trade-destruction missions and sinking many British vessels.
This work depicts the Scharnhorst passage through the Kiel Canal. The two men saluting on the banks of the canal are a veteran and his grandson, both of whom are seeing off their son (the grandson's father) aboard the Scharnhorst. One officer who answers on deck is the very counterpart of them. What are the thoughts of the two generations that know of the defeat in World War I and the grandchild who will now know of the horrors of World War II, as they salute each other?
