「榛名」は、明治44（1911）年4月、神戸川崎造船所（のちの川崎重工業）において建造されました。「榛名」と「霧島」（三菱長崎造船所）の建造を契機に、民間の造艦技術水準は大きく向上しました。2度の近代化改装を経て、有力な高速戦艦となりました。大東亜戦争では様々な作戦に参加し、老艦ながら、その高速を活かして最前線で戦いました。昭和20（1945）年 7月の呉軍港空襲時、アメリカ艦載機による爆撃を被り大破着底し、その生涯を閉じました。日本戦艦中、最も多くの海戦を生き延び、「大日本帝国海軍の武勲艦」と称された「榛名」は、終末を解体という形で迎えました。誉高い老艦は、力尽きても尚その身を資材と変え、戦後復興のために活躍したのです。

The Haruna was laid down in Meiji 44 (1911) at Kawasaki ship yard in Kobe. The Haruna and Kirishima (Nagasaki Mitsubishi ship yard) represented a great increase in the level of ship building expertise in Japan. Modified twice, they became fast, powerful battleships. In the Greater East Asian War (the Pacific War), despite being older ships, they used their speed to be in the forefront of the fighting. In the Showa 20 (1945) carrier air raid on Kure, she was sunk in shallow water, her career coming to an end. Of all the Japanese battleships of the Imperial Japanese Navy, she survived the most battles, and was called “The toughest ship in the Japanese Navy”. In the end, she was scrapped, and so in a sense the spirit of this honorable old ship still lives on today in the material she provided for rebuilding Japan.
