“The Leviathan of Dover -Battleship HMS Rodney 1937-”

　「ロドニー」は、ワシントン海軍軍縮条約下でイギリス海軍が建造したネルソン級戦艦の2番艦です。第二次世界大戦中の特筆すべき戦歴は、「ビスマルク追撃戦」です。その戦いで同艦も「ビスマルク」に猛烈な艦砲射撃を加えました。一説には「ビスマルク」に魚雷を命中させたとあり、真実なら戦艦による戦艦への雷撃で戦果を挙げた人類史上唯一の例です。
　作品は、ドーヴァー海峡を東進する「ロドニー」と「ネルソン」を描いたもの。同級の特徴的な姿と、艤装の差に注目。特に「ロドニー」艦橋下部の切り欠きは、「ネルソン」との顕著な相違点です。悠然と航行する2隻の背景には、チョーク層の白い岩壁が横たわります。



The battleship Rodney was the second ship of the Nelson class built under the restrictions of the Washington Naval treaty. Her notable war record during World War II was the "Chase of the Bismarck". In that battle, she inflicted a furious barrage of gunfire on the Bismarck. One theory is that she hit the Bismarck with a torpedo, which, if true, is the only instance in human history of a torpedo attack by a battleship on a battleship that resulted in a battle.
In this work, she is seen with her sister ship the Nelson on an easterly course though the Dover Straits. Note the distinctive appearance of the class and the differences in the outfitting. In particular, the notch under the bridge of the Rodney is a notable difference from that of the Nelson. The White Cliffs of Dover lies in the background as the two vessels navigate with ease.
