　作品は、日本近海を航行中の「日向」（昭和17年時）をイメージして描いたものです。伊勢型の特徴である、2基ずつ背負式で備えた35.6cm連装砲6基12門と、近代化改装後の重厚感ある艦容とを見る事ができる構図の作品とすべく、試行錯誤を重ねました。昭和17年5月5日伊予灘で行われていた演習中、多数の死傷者を出す5番砲塔爆発事故が発生。これにより5番砲塔が撤去された事が、後に伊勢型が航空戦艦になる要因の1つとなりました。この作品で描かれた「日向」の姿は、同艦が純然たる戦艦だった時の最後の雄姿なのです。

This work depicts the Hyuga (as of 1942) sailing in the waters around Japan. I tried to create the best composition in which the six 35.6cm guns (12 guns), two on each back, and her massive appearance after her modernization and refit can be seen, which are the characteristics of the Ise class. On May 5, 1942, during an exercise in the Iyonada Sea, turret 5 exploded, causing numerous casualties. As a result, turret 5 was removed, which later became one of the factors for the Ise class to become an aircraft battleship. The figure of the Hyuga depicted in this work is the last heroic figure of the ship when she was a pure battleship.
