大日本帝国海軍は、昭和6（1931）年から11（1936）年にかけて1800ｔの海大型10隻を建造する計画を立案しました。しかし、ロンドン海軍軍縮条約の成立に伴い、1400ｔに縮小された海大Ⅵ型aの6隻建造に計画は変更されました。ちなみに海大型は海軍大型潜水艦の意で、高水上速力、大航続力、強雷装、航洋性に優れた艦隊随伴大型潜水艦の分類名称です。Ⅰ型からⅦ型まで建造された海大型の中で、完成型の域に達したのが海大Ⅵ型aで、大東亜戦争中に精鋭艦として第一線で戦い、そのすべてが戦没しました。6隻中、最も目立った戦績を持つのは伊168で、ミッドウェイ海戦においてアメリカ空母「ヨークタウン」と駆逐艦「ハンマン」を雷撃により撃沈しました。

　作品は、艦首の全魚雷発射管から九五式酸素魚雷を発射した伊168を描いたものです。

The Imperial Japanese Navy had a plan to build ten 1,800-ton large submarines from Showa 6 (1931) to Showa 11 (1936). However, under the Washington Naval Treaty, the tonnage was reduced to 1,400 tons and the number of subs ordered to six. Kaidai meant large submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy. They had high surface speed, large cruising radius, and powerful torpedo armament. These large submarines could accompany the fleet. Of all the types from Type I to Type VII, the Type VI reached the best design. They fought everywhere in the Greater East Asian War (the Pacific War), and all were lost. Of these six boats, the I-168 stands out. In the Battle of Midway she torpedoed both the American carrier Yorktown and the destroyer Hammann.

This work shows the I-168 firing Type 95 oxygen torpedoes from all her bow tubes.
