　本作品は、八戸市民を守った「稲木」が迎える、最後の朝を描いたものです。この時、八戸港に仮泊していた「稲木」は、カッターの揚収作業と共に、出港準備作業をしていました。しかし、にわかに敵機来襲を察知し、各員が持ち場に向かって走っています。この日、港内に停泊する軍用艦は「稲木」のみで、しかも錨泊中という圧倒的不利にも関わらず、乗組員たちは果敢に戦いました。艦の背景には、蕪嶋神社と堤防、更に遠方には襲来するアメリカ軍艦載機の大編隊が描き込んであります。この作品で目を引くのは、蕪島名物のウミネコです。画面上のウミネコは29羽で、この数はアメリカ軍艦載機との戦いに散った艦長以下29名の数を意味しています。

This work depicts the last morning of Inagi's life as she protects the citizens of Hachinohe. At this time, the Inagi, temporarily anchored in Hachinohe Port, was preparing to leave port while accommodating the cutter. Suddenly, however, she sensed an attack by enemy aircraft, and the entire crew ran to their battle stations. The Inagi was the only warship there, and even with the odds being overwhelming against her since she was anchored, her crew fought bravely. In the background of this drawing of Inagi is Kabushima Shrine and an embankment, and in the distance are a number of attacking American military aircraft. In this work the seagulls stand out, Kabushima is famous for them. There are 29 of them. They represent the 29 crew members including the captain who gave their lives in this battle.
