　作品は、大正6年8月、第一次世界大戦下の地中海へ派遣され、第二特務艦隊旗艦となった「出雲」の、マルタ島グランドハーバー入港シーンを描いた作品です。石造りの建造物がひしめく様に建ち並ぶ、ヴァレッタの街並みを横目に入港する「出雲」の前部甲板には、乗組員たちが集まり、停泊するための準備作業を行っています。制作に際して「第二特務艦隊記念寫眞帖」と「大正十五年度練習艦隊軍艦出雲外國港灣繋留投錨法」といった貴重な資料を参考にする事ができました。特に後者の資料は、大正15年度練習艦隊で「出雲」に乗り組んだ大崎少佐が手書きで残したもので、マルタ島グランドハーバー停泊の手順が図入りで記述されており、時期は違うものの艦首の描写に大いに役立ちました。自筆の記録が、96年も後に絵を描く際の参考にされるとは、大崎少佐も思ってもみなかったでしょう。

This work depicts the scene of the Izumo, which was sent to the Mediterranean during World War I and became the flagship of the Second Special Squadron, entering Grand Harbor, Malta, in August 1917. Crew members gather on the forward deck of the Izumo, which is entering port with the stone buildings of Valletta standing beside it, to prepare the ship for mooring. In drawing this picture, I was able to refer to such valuable materials as the "Second Special Squadron Memorial Picture Book" and the "Taisho 15 Training Fleet Warship Izumo Foreign Port Anchorage and Ditching Method. The latter document, in particular, was handwritten by Maj. Osaki, who served aboard the Izumo in the 1926 training fleet, and describes the procedure for anchoring in Grand Harbor, Malta, with diagrams, which was very useful in depicting the bow of Izumo, although at different times. Maj. Osaki probably never imagined that his own handwriting would be used as a reference for drawing 96 years later.
