　「おおなみ」（JDS Onami, DD-111）は、あやなみ型護衛艦の6番艦にあたり、帝国海軍の夕雲型駆逐艦「大波」に続く2代目の艦で、その艦名は令和4年現在、たかなみ型護衛艦の2番艦に受け継がれています。あやなみ型護衛艦は、砲熕兵器を減らし、対潜戦能力に重点を置いた対潜護衛艦として、第1次防衛力整備計画の前後、昭和30年から33年度計画にかけて7隻が建造されました。本型は就役後、ワークホースとして長年護衛艦隊を支えました。艦尾に傾斜した甲板（いわゆるオランダ坂）を備えた護衛艦の走りです。「おおなみ」は、第1次防衛力整備計画に基づく昭和33度計画1,700トン型警備艦1611号艦として、石川島重工業東京工場で昭和34年3月20日に起工、昭和35年2月13日に進水、同年8月29日に就役し、呉地方隊に直轄艦として編入されました。昭和48年、第11護衛隊の第3護衛隊群隷下への編成替えを受け、佐世保に転籍。特務艦へ種別変更を経て、平成2年に除籍されました。
　作品は、荒天下の洋上で、任務にあたる「おおなみ」を描いたものです。同艦が、洋上に不審な存在を発見し、警戒しながら徐々に接近を試みている緊張感あるシーンを想定しました。同艦の前部主砲が、睨みつけるように、洋上目標に照準をロックしている様子にご注目下さい。

JDS Onami (DD-111) was the sixth ship of the Ayanami class destroyers and the second generation of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Yugumo class destroyer "Onami". As of 2022, the name has been carried over to the second ship of the Takanami class destroyers. The Ayanami class destroyers were anti-submarine destroyers with reduced guns and weapons, focusing on anti-submarine warfare capability. 7 Ayanami class destroyers were built before and after the First Defense Force Development Plan, from 1955 to the FY 1958 plan. After entering service, the Ayanami class destroyers were truly workhorses, supporting the Escort Fleet for many years. From this type, a distintyyctive deck sloping aft (the so-called Dutch Slope) was provided. The Onami was laid down on March 20, 1959, at the Tokyo Works of Ishikawajima Heavy Industries as the 1,700ton guard ship No. 1611 under the First National Defense Force Development Plan and was launched on February 13, 1960. She was commissioned on August 29 of the same year and incorporated into the Kure District as a direct control ship. In 1973, following the reorganization of the 11th Escort Division into the 3rd Escort Division, she was transferred to Sasebo. After changing her classification to an auxiliary vessel, she was decommissioned in 1990.
This work depicts the Onami on her mission at sea in stormy weather. I envisioned a tense scene in which she discovers a suspicious presence at sea and gradually attempts to approach it with caution. Note how her forward main guns are locking their sights on the target at sea, as if glaring at it.
