　かが（JS Kaga, DDH-184）は、帝国海軍の航空母艦「加賀」に続き、日本艦としては2代目の艦です。全通式甲板を備えたヘリコプター搭載護衛艦で、1番艦の「いずも」と共に海上自衛隊では最大の艦艇（令和4年現在）です。「かが」は、しらね型護衛艦2番艦「くらま」の代替艦として計画され、平成24年度計画19,500トン型ヘリコプター搭載護衛艦（24DDH）として、ジャパンマリンユナイテッド横浜事業所磯子工場で平成25年10月7日に起工され、平成29年3月22日に就役し、第2護衛隊群（佐世保基地）に編成替えとなった「いせ」に替わり、第4護衛隊群第4護衛隊に編入されました。今後は、優れた搭載能力を活かして、領域防衛のみならず、災害派遣等の場でも大いに活躍が期待されます。また、令和8年度末に予定される定期検査に合わせ、F-35B戦闘機の搭載に向けた大規模な改修が予定されています。
　作品は、太平洋上で作戦行動中の「かが」を描いたものです。艦からは、今まさにオスプレイが発艦したところです。艦上には、SH-60Kが整列し、発艦準備中です。この角度から眺めた同艦は、一見アングルドデッキを備えた空母と見まごう、堂々たる姿をしています。タイトルの「White Base」は、同艦のニックネームです。

JS Kaga (DDH-184) is the second-generation Japanese ship, following the aircraft carrier Kaga of the Imperial Japanese Navy. She is a helicopter destroyer with an all-through deck and is the largest ship in the Maritime Self-Defense Force (as of 2022), together with the first ship, the Izumo. Kaga is intended to replace the aging Shirane class destroyer Kurama, based on the schedule outlined within the 23 Mid-term Defence Capability Maintenance Plan to construct a 19,500ton helicopter destroyer. Construction began at the Yokohama plant of Japan Marine United on 7 October 2013, and the ship was launched on 27 August 2015, with the commissioning on 22 March 2017. She was then transferred to the 4th Fleet Escort Flotilla, 4th Escort Division, replacing the Ise which was reorganized to the 2nd Escort Flotilla (Sasebo). Taking advantage of its superior loading capability, she is expected to play an active role not only in territorial defense, but also in disaster relief efforts. In addition, a major refurbishment is planned to accommodate the F-35B jet fighter in time for the regular inspection scheduled for the end of FY2026.

From this angle, the ship looks imposing, almost like an aircraft carrier with an angled flight deck. The title "White Base" is her nickname.
