　「くにさき」（JS Kunisaki, LST-4003）は、おおすみ型輸送艦の3番艦です。海上自衛隊は、おおすみ型輸送艦で初めて全通式甲板を導入しました。艦名は、国東半島に由来します。艦内後部に設けられたウェルドックには、2隻の輸送用ホバークラフト（LCAC）を搭載しており、大きな艦体と充実した設備、全通飛行甲板のおかげでヘリコプターの運用に適し、前世代の輸送艦に比べて、水陸両用作戦等における指揮統制、大規模輸送、航空運用能力を大幅に向上させました。陸上自衛隊の部隊であれば330名の1個普通科中隊戦闘群と装備品を搭載でき、民間人輸送時には約1,000名の乗艦が可能とされています。また艦内には、優れた医療機能も備えており、手術も可能です。
　作品は、離島奪還作戦に従事する「くにさき」を描いたものです。解放された艦尾のウェルドックからはLCACが出動中で、甲板上にはCH-47Jチヌーク２機が発艦準備中です。その上空にはAH-64Dが４機、更に観測ヘリOH-1もいます。背景の島影は、尖閣諸島魚釣島です。タイトルの「Garrison Owl」は、同艦のニックネームです。



JS Kunisaki (LST-4003) is the third ship of the Osumi class of tank landing ships. The Maritime Self-Defense Force introduced the first all-through deck on this Osumi class tank landing ships. The ship's name is derived from the Kunisaki Peninsula. The well dock at the rear of the ship carries two transport hovercraft (LCAC), and her large hull, extensive equipment, and all-through flight deck make it suitable for helicopter operations, greatly improving command and control, large-scale transport, and air operations capabilities in amphibious and other operations compared to conventional landing ships. It is capable of carrying one regular company combat group of 330 men and equipment for Ground Self-Defense Force units, and approximately 1,000 men when transporting civilians. The ship also has excellent medical capabilities and is capable of performing surgeries.
This work depicts the Kunisaki engaged in an operation to recapture a remote island. Two LCACs are being deployed from the released aft well dock, and two CH-47J Chinooks are on deck preparing to take off. Above them are four AH-64Ds, plus an observation helicopter OH-1. The island in the background is Uotsuri Island in the Senkaku Island. The title "Garrison Owl" is the nickname of the ship.
