　「おおたか」（JS Otaka, PG-826）と「しらたか」（JS Shirataka, PG-829）は、はやぶさ型ミサイル艇の3番艇と6番艇です。ミサイル艇は、従来の魚雷艇に代わる沿岸防備用の高速艇として計画されたものですが、第1世代の全没型水中翼艇の1号型ミサイル艇の失敗を踏まえて、新たに建造が計画されたのが、このはやぶさ型です。同型の初期計画の段階で能登半島沖不審船事件（平成11年）が発生し、これを受けて船型の変更や最高速力の引き上げ、識別能力、耐弾性の強化、12.7mm単装機銃の装備が図られました。その高いステルス性を生かし、電波封止状態で目標に接近し、後部に積んだSSMで攻撃するというのが、対艦戦闘時のはやぶさ型ミサイル艇の基本的な運用思想です。
　作品は、不審船発見の報を受け、緊急出動するミサイル艇「おおたか」と「しらたか」を描いたものです。ウォータージェット推進器から生み出される独特な航跡を曳きながら、40ノットを越える高速で現場海域に急行する2隻は、さながら「海の戦闘機」です。
タイトルは、両艇のニックネームです。

JS Otaka (PG-826) and JS Shirataka (PG-829) are the third and sixth Hayabusa class guided missile boats. Guided missile boats were planned to replace conventional torpedo boats as high-speed boats for coastal defense, but the Hayabusa class missile boats were newly planned for construction based on the failure of the first generation of fully submerged hydrofoil boats, the Type 1 missile boats. In the early planning stages of the Hayabusa model, a suspicious ship incident off the Noto Peninsula (1999) occurred, and in response, the hull form was changed, the maximum speed was increased, identification capability and bullet resistance were enhanced, and a 12.7mm single-barrel machine gun was installed. The basic operational concept of the Hayabusa missile boat in anti-ship combat is to approach a target in radio silence and attack it with the SSM mounted on the aft section of the boat, taking advantage of her high stealth.
This work depicts the guided missile boats Otaka and Shirataka, which are dispatched on an emergency basis after receiving news of the discovery of a suspicious ship. The two vessels are like "sea fighters" as they rush to the site at speeds in excess of 40 knots, leaving a unique wake produced by their water-jet propulsion systems.
The title is a nickname for both boats.
