「加古」は、昭和17（1942）年の第一次ソロモン海海戦で、第八艦隊旗艦重巡洋艦「鳥海」に率いられた第六戦隊（「青葉」、「加古」、「古鷹」、「衣笠」）の構成艦として、敵艦隊と壮絶な夜戦を繰り広げました。日本側に喪失艦はなく、一方の連合軍は重巡洋艦4隻・駆逐艦1隻が沈没、重巡洋艦・駆逐艦各1隻がという結果となり、日本側の圧倒的大勝利でした。しかしその翌日、突如潜水艦による雷撃を受け、艦首、艦中央部、艦尾に１本ずつ魚雷が命中し、僅か5分で沈没しました。その時、対潜警戒のための「之の字運動」をすることなく航行中でした。

　作品は青葉から眺めた第六戦隊で、後続する「加古」以下、「古鷹」、「衣笠」が艦隊行動をとる様子を描きました。先行艦に合わせて取り舵を切り、その航跡を乗り越えるダイナミックな場面です。「加古」が没して75周年にあたる平成29（2017）年、この作品を「加古」の艦内神社分霊元である日岡神社に奉納しました。

In Showa 17 (1942) the Kako, in the first battle of the Solomons, engaged in a wild night battle with the enemy fleet while under the command of the flagship of the 8th Fleet, the heavy cruiser Chokai, part of the 6th Division (Aoba, Kako, Furutaka, Kinugasa). There were no losses on the Japanese side, but since the enemy lost four heavy cruisers and one destroyer, with one heavy cruiser and one destroyer seriously damaged, it was a one-sided Japanese victory. However, the next day she took three torpedo hits from a submarine, forward, amidships and astern, and sank within five minutes. At that time, she was not steaming in an anti- submarine zig zag course.

This work shows the view from the Aoba with the 6th Division, consisting of the Kako, followed by the Furutaka and Kinugasa, underway. Looking from the stern of the leading ship, we can see them change course. In Heisei 29 (2017), on the 75th anniversary of her sinking, this work was dedicated to the Hioka Shrine. This shrine had shared its patron deity with the shrine onboard the heavy cruiser Kako.
