作品は、「衣笠」が夜の海で探照灯を照射しつつ、目標に向けて主砲を照準中のシーンをイメージして描いたものです。夜の海も満天の星空の表現も、作者はこの作品で初めて挑戦しました。特に星空を表現するにあたっては、様々な消しゴムを駆使しつつ試行錯誤を重ねて手がけ、記録写真では見る事のできない、印象的な仕上がりを目指しました。「衣笠」が最期を迎えた際に、砲術長伝令として同艦に乗り組んだ丸敏郎氏（令和2年逝去）の証言を基に、測的所の窓を防弾板で全てふさいだ様子を描いています。

In this drawing Kinugasa is shown at night using her searchlights and training her main gun battery on the target. This work was my first attempt to express both the night sea and the star-filled sky. In particular, the starry skies were created through a process of trial and error, using a variety of erasers to achieve a striking finish that cannot be seen in photographic documentation. Based on the testimony of Mr. Toshiro Maru (passed away in 2020), who served on board the Kinugasa as the chief gunnery officer's messenger during her final battle, this work depicts how the windows of the measuring station were all covered with bulletproof boards..
