　作品は、昭和19年10月25日午前7時頃の、タフィ3へ突進中の「熊野」を描いたもの。同艦の後方には「鈴谷」・「筑摩」・「利根」が続航し、並行するように「羽黒」その後方に「鳥海」が速力を上げて進みます。その更に後方には、旗艦の「大和」と随伴する「長門」、背景の最奥に「能代」を旗艦とする第二水雷戦隊が一気に増速していきます。このおよそ30分後、「熊野」のこの美しい艦首は、被雷により、その先端から13mが失われてしまうのです。本作品は、令和元年11月24日、同艦の艦内神社分霊元である「熊野本宮大社」にて「重巡洋艦熊野戦没75年慰霊顕彰祭」が斎行された際に、同社へ奉納されました。

Hiroyuki Sugano Warship Pencil Portraits “Shozo - SHO - The Roar of the Waves, 　　the Reverberation of Triumphant Song”

This work depicts the Kumano during an assault on Taffy 3 at approximately 7:00 a.m. on October 25, 1944. Behind her, Suzuya, Chikuma, and Tone continue to sail, and in parallel, Haguro and Chokai increase their speed. Further behind, the flagship Yamato and the accompanying Nagato can be seen, and at the far end of the background, the Second Destroyer Squadron, with the Noshiro as flagship, is increasing its speed at once. Approximately 30 minutes after the scene depicted in this work, the beautiful bow of the Kumano would lose 13 meters from its tip due to a torpedo hit. This work was dedicated to the Kumano Hongu-taisha Shrine, which has divided its divine spirit into the shrine on board the Kumano, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary memorial service for the sinking of the heavy cruiser Kumano on November 24, 2019.
