　「ル・テリブル」は、フランス海軍のル・ファンタスク級大型駆逐艦の5番艦です。同艦は俊足で名高く、1935年の公試中に基準排水量状態で45.02ノット（83.38 km/h）を記録しました。これは世界の駆逐艦で最速の記録としてギネス世界記録に登録されており、2022年現在も破られていません。第二次世界大戦緒戦は、戦艦「ダンケルク」や「ストラスブール」といった新鋭艦艇と共に、ドイツ海軍の通商破壊艦を捜索するための哨戒活動に従事しました。フランスの降伏後、フランス艦隊が枢軸側へ渡る事を危惧するイギリス海軍が、メルセルケビールに停泊していたフランス艦隊を攻撃。その際、同艦は空襲と激しい砲撃に晒されつつも港を脱出し、同じく脱出に成功した「ストラスブール」を護衛しつつ、イギリス艦隊の追撃を振り切る事に成功しました。その後、ヴィシー・フランス軍が自由フランス側に加わり、同艦も連合国軍側の艦艇として地中海の各方面で終戦まで戦い抜きました。
　作品は、イギリス艦隊による空襲と艦砲射撃に見舞われたメルセルケビール港から、辛くも脱出に成功した「ル・テリブル」と「ストラスブール」を描いたものです。執拗に迫る追撃を振り切るべく増速中のシーン。背後の「ストラスブール」は、港内で爆沈した僚艦の破片を吸入し機関不調を起こし、黒煙を吐いています。

The Le Terrible was the fifth of the Le Fantasque class of large destroyers in the French Navy. She was renowned for her speed, reaching 45.02 knots (83.38 km/h) at standard draught during public trials in 1935. This record is registered in the Guinness World Records as the fastest destroyer in the world and remains unbeaten as of 2022. In the early stages of World War II, she was engaged in patrols to search for German naval trade-destroying vessels, along with newer vessels such as the battleships Dunkerque and Strasbourg. After the French surrender, the Royal Navy, fearing that the French fleet would be acquired by the Axis side, attacked the French fleet anchored at Mers-el-Kébir. When attacked, she escaped from the harbor under heavy bombardment and air raids and succeeded in fending off the British fleet's pursuit while escorting the Strasbourg, which also managed to escape. Later, as the Vichy French forces joined the Free French side, she also fought as a ship on the Allied side until the end of the war in various parts of the Mediterranean.
This work depicts Le Terrible and Strasbourg narrowly escaping from the port of Mers-el-Kébir, which was hit by an air raid and shelling by the British fleet. They are increasing speed to fend off a relentless pursuit. The Strasbourg in the background is breathing black smoke due to engine malfunction caused by debris from a sunken companion ship in the harbor.
