　作品は、昭和19年10月22日に抜錨し、ブルネイ泊地から出撃していく西村艦隊を描いたものです。壮絶な夜間戦闘の末、スリガオ海峡に果てた西村艦隊全艦の遺影のつもりで制作しました。揚錨作業が行われる旗艦「山城」と随伴艦「扶桑」を見守るように、先行して出航する重巡「最上」、後続は駆逐艦「時雨」・「山雲」・「満潮」・「朝雲」です。本作品を描くにあたり、スリガオ海峡海戦で偵察機乗組員として「最上」に乗り組まれた加藤昇氏（令和2年逝去）に貴重な証言をして頂きました。加藤氏に深い敬意を表するため、本作品では「最上」を主役に据えました。

The work depicts the Nishimura Fleet, which un-anchor on October 22, 1944, and sorties from Brunei Anchorage. I drew this as a portrait of all the ships of the Nishimura Fleet that perished in the Surigao Strait after a fierce night battle. Watching over the flagship Yamashiro and the accompanying ship Fuso as they work to leave port, the heavy cruiser Mogami sails ahead, followed by the destroyers Shigure, Yamagumo, Michishio and Asagumo. Mr. Noboru Kato (passed away in 2020), who served on board the Mogami as a scouting plane crew during the Battle of Surigao Strait, provided us with his valuable testimony for drawing this work. In order to express my deepest respect to Mr. Kato, I have placed the Mogami as the main subject of this work.
