　一等巡洋艦「日進」は、もともとはアルゼンチンがイタリアのアンサルド社に発注した、ジュゼッペ・ガリバルディ級装甲巡洋艦「モレノ」でした。しかし建造契約はキャンセルとなり、当時関係が悪化していた日露両国は、完成間近だった「モレノ」と「リヴァダヴィア（後の「春日」）」を手に入れようと画策し合いました。結果、破格の金額を入札した日本がこの有力な2隻を手に入れ、「日進」と「春日」と命名し、苦難の末に日本への回航を果たしました。日本海海戦では、姉妹艦の「春日」と共に、第一艦隊第一戦隊に編入され戦いました。日本海海戦時に高野五十六（後の山本五十六）が少尉候補生として乗り組んでおり、この時に左手の人差指と中指を欠損、左大腿部に重傷を負っています。
　この作品は、明治38年5月27日の歴史的大勝利のきっかけとして有名な、敵前大回頭の最中にある「日進」を描いたものです。同艦は、まさにターンを開始した先行艦の「春日」に続き、回頭地点に突き進んでいるところです。舷側部の砲座周囲に描き込まれた砲戦に備える乗組員たちから、戦いの緊迫感を感じて貰えれば幸いです。先行する「三笠」・「敷島」・「富士」・「朝日」の向こうには、発砲中のバルチック艦隊第一戦艦隊（先頭から「クニャージ・スヴォーロフ」・「オリョール」・「インペラートル・アレクサンドル3世」・「ボロジノ」）を描き込んであります。

The armored cruiser Nisshin was originally the Moreno, a Giuseppe Garibaldi class armored cruiser ordered by Argentina from Ansaldo of Italy. However, the construction contract was cancelled, and both Japan and Russia, whose relations were worsening at the time, schemed to acquire the soon-to-be-completed Moreno and Rivadavia (later known as Kasuga). As a result, Japan, which bid an unbelievable amount of money, acquired these two powerful ships, named them "Nisshin" and "Kasuga," and after much hardship, they made the voyage to Japan. In the Battle of Tsushima, she fought as part of the First Fleet. At the Battle of Tsushima Takano Isoroku (later Yamamoto Isoroku) was aboard as a Lieutenant Cadet, at this time he lost his index finger and middle finger of his left hand, and his left femur was severely injured.
This drawing shows her on May 27, 1905. This work depicts the Nisshin in the midst of the famous Togo Turn, which triggered the historic victory on May 27, 1905. She is following Kasuga which has begun to turn, she is approaching the turning point. Beyond the leading Mikasa, Shikishima, Fuji, and Asahi, the First Baltic Fleet (from the top: Knyaz Suvorov, Oryol, Imperator Aleksandr III, and Borodino) is depicted as it begins its bombardment.
