「戦艦 イタリア & ヴィットリオ・ヴェネト 1943（戦艦 ローマより望む）」
“Battleship RM Italia & RM Vittorio Veneto 1943 (Seen from Battleship RM Roma)” リットリオ級は、イタリア海軍がフランス海軍のダンケルク級戦艦に対抗すべく1930年代に計画・建造した戦艦です。
作品は、イタリア降伏後にマルタ島を目指すリットリオ級を描いたもので、イタリアの最新鋭戦艦3隻が共に行動した最後の光景です。旗艦「ローマ」の右舷側から随伴する「イタリア」と「ヴィットリオ・ヴェネト」を望む構図で描きました。この後、連合国へのイタリア艦隊引き渡し阻止を図るドイツ軍航空部隊による最新誘導弾「フリッツX」の攻撃が行われ、「ローマ」は爆沈、「イタリア」も大破しました。「ローマ」に命中したフリッツXの初弾は、この絵に描かれた場所に着弾しました。
The Littorio class battleships were planned and built by the Italian Navy in the 1930s to compete with the Dunkerque class battleships of the French Navy.
This work depicts the Littorio class heading for Malta after the Italian surrender, the last time three of Italy's most advanced battleships acted together. After this, the "Rome" was sunk, and the "Italia" was destroyed by the latest "Fritz X" guided missile attack by German air forces in an attempt to prevent the handover of the Italian fleet to the Allies. This work depicts the starboard side of the flagship Roma looking toward the accompanying the Italia and the Vittorio Veneto, and the first shot of the Fritz X that hit the Roma hit exactly this place.
