　「信濃」は、大和型戦艦の3番艦として元々戦艦として建造されていましたが、ミッドウェイ海戦後の戦局変化を受けて設計変更され、昭和19年11月19日に航空母艦として竣工しました。第二次世界大戦に参加した最大の航空母艦でしたが、横須賀工廠から呉工廠へ回航される際には、まだ多くの作業を要する状態で、航海中も艦内で工事が続けられていました。「信濃」は、空襲を避けるために実行された呉工廠への回航途上、紀伊半島潮岬沖合でアメリカ海軍の潜水艦「アーチャーフィッシュ」の攻撃を受けました。同艦の放った魚雷4本はことごとく「信濃」に命中し、11月29日午前10時50分頃に転覆沈没、就役から僅か10日でその艦歴に終止符を打ちました。
作品は、「信濃」の本来求められた姿を描いたものです。第二次世界大戦に参加した最大の空母である一方で、世界史上最短の艦歴で終わった同艦ですから、せめて絵の中では空母として活躍させてやりたいと、かねてから思っていたのです。空母として十分すぎるほどの装甲を備えた飛行甲板と格納庫を有し、敵の攻撃を受けても戦闘を継続できる海上基地となる事を期待された巨大空母「信濃」。その巨体が波を砕き大洋を進む姿は、まさに威風堂々という言葉がぴったりです。最新鋭の攻撃機「流星改」が今まさに魚雷を抱き発艦したところで、上空には「烈風」が警戒中です。

The Shinano was originally built as the third battleship of the Yamato class but was redesigned after the Battle of Midway and completed as an aircraft carrier on November 19, 1944. She was the largest aircraft carrier to participate in World War II, but she was still in need of much work when she was turned around from the Yokosuka Arsenal to the Kure Arsenal, and work continued on the ship during the voyage. She was attacked by the U.S. Navy submarine Archer Fish off Cape Ushio, Kii Peninsula, on her way to Kure Arsenal, which was executed to avoid an air raid. All four torpedoes she fired hit the Shinano and she capsized and sank at about 10:50 a.m. on November 29, ending her career just 10 days after her commissioning.
The work depicts the originally expected appearance of the Shinano. While she was the largest aircraft carrier to participate in World War II, she was also the shortest-lived in world history. Therefore, I have long wanted to make her active as an aircraft carrier, at least in my drawing. With a flight deck and hangar that were more than adequate for an aircraft carrier, the giant aircraft carrier Shinano was expected to be a sea base that could continue fighting even if attacked by the enemy. The sight of her huge body breaking the waves and moving through the ocean is truly majestic! The state-of-the-art attack bomber Ryusei-Kai has just launched with its torpedo loaded, above it, fighters "Reppu" are flying in formation, providing a covering flight.
