「冥空の稲妻 -九州 J7W 局地戦闘機 震電」
“Lightning in the Deep Sky -Kyushu J7W Shinden-”【画集第2弾 好評発売中!】
菅野泰紀鉛筆艦船画集The Shinden is a prototype short-range, land-based interceptor developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy at the end of World War II. It has a unique fuselage shape that looks as if the front and back of an ordinary aircraft have been reversed. It was also called "heretical wing" because of its extremely distinctive wing shape. Development of the prototype was completed in 1945 with the goal of achieving a maximum speed of 740 km/h (400 knots) or more. On August 3 of the same year, the first flight was successfully completed by a test flight piloted by a Kyushu Aircraft test pilot. The next test flights were conducted on August 6 and 8, but the engine malfunctioned, and the war ended while parts were being ordered from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The Shinden was a maniacal warplane known only to those in the know, but it attracted attention when it was selected as the aircraft that the main character boarded to fight Godzilla in the hit movie "Godzilla-1.0," which was released in 2023. The full-scale model used in the filming is on display at the Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum.
This work was created to contribute to an article related to the "Godzilla-1.0" feature in the military magazine Maru. I purchased the plastic model and considered various compositions, but I could not find a more attractive figure than the composition in which the aircraft is viewed from the nose side with a wide-angle view. For me, the "Shinden" is still this figure.
