「多摩」は、球磨型軽巡洋艦の2番艦です。大東亜戦争では昭和16（1941）年から昭和18（1943）年にかけて、北部太平洋の過酷な自然条件下で作戦に従事し、アリューシャン列島のキスカ島攻略作戦やアッツ島沖海戦に参加しました。昭和19（1944）年10月25日のエンガノ岬沖海戦で、アメリカ艦載機の波状攻撃により大破しました。応急修理の後、ルソン島の北西沖合を沖縄へ向け単独で航行中に、アメリカ潜水艦「ジャラオ」の雷撃により撃沈され、乗組員全員と共にフィリピンの海に消えました。作品は平成24（2012）年に制作したものですが、その後「多摩」と共に北部太平洋で行動した「木曾」の元乗組員の方から証言を得て、また新たに手に入れた写真や映像資料を元に、平成29（2017）年に加筆し、史実に一層忠実な仕上がりとなりました。

The light cruiser Tama was the second ship of the Kuma class. In the Greater East Asian War (the Pacific War), from Showa 16 (1941) to Showa 18 (1943) she was stationed in the very rough North Pacific waters, and was part of the Attu and Kiska operation in the Aleutian Islands. On October 25, Showa 19 (1944) she was badly damaged by American air attack in the Cape Engano operation. After emergency repairs, while steaming alone towards Okinawa north of the Luzon, she was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Jallao, and sank with all her crew into the Philippine Sea. This work was originally created in Heisei 24 (2012), however, after talking with a crew member from her sister ship Kiso, and examining photographic material, I made corrections in Heisei 29 (2017).
