　戦艦「大和」は、その建造から終焉までのエピソードが極めて印象深く、今でも日本人の心の中に大きな存在としてあり続けています。帝国海軍軍人たちは、「大和」を帝国海軍の象徴として誇りに思い、「不沈戦艦大和」が戦い続けることができる限り、日本は滅びることはないと強く信じて戦いました。

　本作品は、連合艦隊が南西諸島沖縄地区防衛のために企画、立案そして発動した天一号作戦をテーマに、最後の戦いに臨む「大和」を描いたもので、木製甲板は黒く塗られ、中央構造物周辺には24門の連装高角砲、150門を越える対空機関銃が装備されており、その姿はまるでハリネズミのようで、あたかも自らが大艦巨砲主義の終焉を語っているようです。同作戦では、第一遊撃部隊（第二艦隊のうち、第一航空戦隊の戦艦「大和」と第二水雷戦隊の軽巡洋艦「矢矧」・駆逐艦8隻からなる）が一億総特攻の先駆けとなる水上特攻部隊として、昭和20（1945）年4月6日に沖縄方面に出撃。翌7日にアメリカ海軍第58任務部隊がそれを迎撃しました。午後12時40分から約2時間におよぶ戦闘の結果、「大和」以下6隻が沖縄へ到達せぬまま壮絶な最期を遂げました。この天一号作戦が帝国海軍の大型水上艦による最後の攻撃となりました。

　本作品のシーンは、昭和20（1945）年4月７日早朝、戦艦「大和」が大隅半島沖合を南下し、搭載していた最後の艦載機である零式水上偵察機を発艦させた後をイメージしたものです。発艦した零式水上偵察機が、「大和」の周囲を旋回しながら最後の別れを交わしています。また、艦隊は第三警戒航行序列を構成しており、「大和」の背後には、駆逐艦「浜風」（左端）、駆逐艦「雪風」（中央）、駆逐艦「冬月」（右端）が描かれています。加えて、第一遊撃部隊が最後に見た日本の島影として大隅半島と、その更に向こうに開聞岳が霞んで見えています。

The story of the battleship Yamato, from her construction to her final sortie to destruction, still leaves a deep impression in the hearts of Japanese people. For the men of the Imperial Navy, the "Yamato" was the proud symbol of the Imperial Navy, as long the "unsinkable Yamato" kept on fighting, they believed that Japan would not be destroyed. On April 6th of 1945 "The special attack of the hundred million" was launched towards the battlefield of Okinawa with Yamato in the lead, the next day American carrier based aircraft attacked , and the brave Yamato met her fate without reaching Okinawa.

This pencil drawing depicts Yamato in the final battle on the theme of Operation Ten Ichigo, which was planned, drawn up and launched by the Combined Fleet for the defence of the Okinawa area in the Nansei Islands. The wooden deck of the battleship Yamato has been painted black, and the central structure is surrounded by 24 double anti-aircraft high-angle guns and over 150 anti-aircraft machine guns, making it look like a hedgehog, as if it itself were telling the story of the end of big-ship big-arms policy. In this operation, the 1st Strike Force, consisting of the battleship Yamato, the light cruiser Yahagi and eight destroyers, sailed to the Okinawa area on 6 April 1945 as a waterborne suicide attack force, a precursor to the 100 million man suicide attack. On the following day, 7 April, the US Navy's 58th Task Force intercepted them. After a two-hour battle starting at 12.40pm, six ships, including the Yamato, were sunk before reaching Okinawa. Operation Ten-Go Ⅰ was the last attack by the Imperial Navy's large surface vessels.

The scene in this work depicts the battleship Yamato in the early morning of 7 April 1945. The scene shows the Yamato heading south off the coast of the Osumi Peninsula after launching the last of her onboard aircraft, a Type Zero seaplane. The launched Type Zero seaplane circled around the Yamato as they exchanged final farewells. The fleet also forms a ring formation, with the destroyer Hamakaze (far left), the destroyer Yukikaze (centre) and the destroyer Fuyutsuki (far right) behind Yamato. In addition, the Osumi Peninsula and, further beyond, Mount Kaimondake can be seen in the haze as the last Japanese islands seen by the 1st Strike Force.
