「筑波」は初の国産主力艦として、呉海軍工廠で建造されました。日露戦争中の旅順攻撃で主力戦艦「初瀬」、「八島」を一度に失った日本は、2隻に代わる主力艦を急いで手に入れる必要に迫られました。戦争中は第三国に新たな軍艦を発注できないため、それまでの戦訓を踏まえた日本独自の設計で、起工から進水まで僅か1年という驚異的スピードで建造が進められました。結果的には日露戦争中に完成しなかったものの、自国で大型戦闘艦を建造できたことは海軍関係者を大いに奮い立たせ、以後の国産主力艦建造への道筋を示すことになりました。しかし、本艦の竣工時には既に「ドレッドノート」が就役しており、また間もなく世界初の巡洋戦艦「インヴィンシブル」も就役したため、戦略的価値は低下してしまいました。第一次世界大戦では第一南遣支隊として南太平洋やインド洋方面まで進出し、通商保護作戦や占領などに従事しました。大戦中の大正6（1917）年１月14日、横須賀停泊中に前部主砲火薬庫が爆発し大破着底しました。乗組員305名と共に10年の生涯を終えました。

The Tsukuba was the first powerful warship built in Japan at Kure Naval Yard. When Japan lost the main battleships Yashima and Hatsuse in the attack on Port Arthur in the Russo-Japanese War, there was a pressing need for two ships to replace them. Since it was not possible to order another vessel from a third country in wartime, Japan designed this ship on her own, applying the lessons learned in combat and speeding the process from construction to launching to only one year. She was not completed in time to participate in the Russo-Japanese War, however her being built in Japan greatly encouraged those who were involved with the Imperial Japanese Navy and provided an example for vessels to be constructed in the future. However, when she was being built, the Dreadnought already existed, and the first battle cruiser Invincible was about to be launched, so her strategic value was reduced. In the First World War she served in the First Southern Expeditionary Fleet in the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, protecting commerce and assisting in the occupation of the islands of the South Pacific Mandate. On January 14, Taisho 6 (1917), while anchored in Yokosuka, she suffered a magazine explosion, 305 crewmen were lost, and her 10 years of service ended.
