　US-1は、新明和工業が開発し、海上自衛隊が使用した救難飛行艇です。新明和工業の前身は、九七式飛行艇や二式大型飛行艇等の傑作飛行艇、名戦闘機として名高い局地戦闘機「紫電」・「紫電改」を開発･製造した川西航空機で、US-1開発には蓄積されたノウハウがふんだんに投入されました。コールサインはIVORY（アイボリー）で、初飛行はPS-1の原型PS-Xによって、昭和42年10月24日、PS-1改によって昭和49年10月6日に行われました。またUS-1は、日本が開発・実用化した初の「水陸両用機」でもありました。飛行艇の有利な点は、洋上での発着が可能な事により、飛行場の無い離島へもアクセスできる事、ヘリコプターより長い航続距離と、ヘリコプターや船舶よりもはるかに高速である事です。US-1は、これらの利点を最大限に活用した機体でした。
　この作品は、勇ましくしぶきを上げて離水する71号機を、写真撮影する事が不可能な場所から見た構図で描いたものです。制作時には、第31航空群第71航空隊の初代飛行隊長を務められ、同航空群の13代司令を務められた西島宜弘氏（退役海将補）とご親族より多大なご協力を頂きました。この作品の複製画は、西島氏のご希望もあり、海上自衛隊岩国航空基地へ寄贈しました。

The US-1 is a rescue amphibian developed by ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd. and used by the Maritime Self-Defense Force. The predecessor of ShinMaywa Industries was Kawanishi Aircraft, which developed and manufactured masterpiece amphibians such as the Type 97 Amphibian and Type 2 Large Amphibian, as well as the famous fighter aircraft, the Shiden/Shiden Kai, and a lot of accumulated know-how was put into the development of the US-1. The first flight was made on October 24, 1967, by the PS-X, the prototype of the PS-1, and on October 6, 1974, by the PS-1 Kai. The US-1 was also the first “amphibious aircraft” developed and made practical by Japan. The advantages of amphibians are that they can land and take off at sea, allowing access to remote islands without airfields, have a longer range and are much faster than helicopters or ships. The US-1 was an aircraft that took full advantage of these advantages.
This work was drawn from a composition of a view of the 71, splashing valiantly and taking off from the water, from a location that would have been impossible to photograph. This work was drawn with the generous cooperation of Mr. Yoshihiro Nishijima (retired Rear Admiral), the first squadron commander of Air Rescue Squadron 71 of Fleet Air Wing 31 and the 13th commander of Fleet Air Wing 31, and his family. At Mr. Nishijima’s request, I donated a reproduction of this work to the Iwakuni Air Base of the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
