　「アリゾナ」は、アメリカ海軍のペンシルヴァニア級戦艦の2番艦です。就役時は、当時のアメリカ戦艦の特徴でもあった籠型マストを備えていましたが、1929年5月から実施された近代化改装で、前後マスト共に強固な三脚檣に改められ、砲門の交換・改良や甲板装甲の追加、カタパルトの改良、主機交換、浸水対策等が施されました。日米戦の火ぶたが切られた真珠湾攻撃で、日本機の水平爆撃により艦内の火薬が引火し大爆発して着底しました。その後2日間にわたり燃え続けた同艦の被害規模は甚大で、修理は断念されました。戦後も「アリゾナ」の残骸は残され、艦と共に戦没した乗組員を悼むため、メインマストから延びるポールには星条旗が掲げ続けられています。1962年5月30日に正式に国定慰霊碑として指定された同艦は、現在も真珠湾の象徴として訪れる人々に戦争の歴史を伝えています。
　作品は、1941年時の戦艦「アリゾナ」をモデルにして描いたものです。ダイヤモンドヘッドを背景に、同艦がオアフ島に打ち寄せるビッグウェーブを力強くぶち破りつつ、太平洋へ出航していくシーンです。

The Arizona was the second Pennsylvania class battleships of the U.S. Navy. When she was commissioned, she had caged masts, which were characteristics of American battleships at the time, but during the modernization and refit that began in May 1929, both her fore and aft masts were converted to strong tripod masts, and the gun ports were replaced and improved, deck armor was added, catapults were improved, main engines were replaced, and measures were taken to prevent flooding. During the attack on Pearl Harbor, which triggered the war between the U.S. and Japan, she was horizontally bombed by Japanese planes, and the gunpowder in her ammunition magazines ignited, causing a huge explosion and sinking her to the bottom. The damage to the ship, which burned for the next two days, was so extensive that repairs were abandoned. After the war, the wreckage of the Arizona was left behind, and the Stars and Stripes flag continues to fly on a pole extending from the main mast in memory of the crew who died with the ship. Officially designated as a National Memorial on May 30, 1962, the ship remains a symbol of Pearl Harbor today, telling the war story to those who visit it.
