“The Immortal Big Ben -Aircraft Carrier USS Franklin 1945-”

　「フランクリン」は、アメリカ海軍のエセックス級航空母艦の5番艦。「ビッグ・ベン」と親しまれた同艦は、就役直後の台湾沖航空戦とレイテ沖海戦で3度損傷。更に修理と改修を経た翌３月19日には、日本近海で日本機の爆撃を受け、甲板上・格納庫内の航空機と弾薬が引火誘爆し激しく炎上、上部構造物がほぼ全損する深刻な損害を被りました。しかし乗組員による必死の消火作業が奏功し艦は自沈を免れ、本国へ回航されその戦いを終えました。
　作品は、1945年に日本近海で作戦行動中の同艦を描いたもの。今まさに、F4U-1D（アメリカ海兵隊第214戦闘飛行隊所属）が着艦するところです。



The Franklin was the fifth of the U.S. Navy's Essex class aircraft carriers. Known affectionately as "Big Ben", she was damaged three times in the Formosa Air Battle and the Battle of Leyte Gulf shortly after her commissioning. On March 19, after further repairs and refurbishment, the ship was bombed by Japanese aircraft in the seas around Japan. The aircraft and ammunition on deck and in the hangars ignited and exploded, causing severe damage to the ship's superstructure. However, thanks to the crew's desperate firefighting efforts, she escaped sinking and was repatriated to her home country, ending the battle.
This work depicts the Franklin on maneuvers in the waters around Japan in 1945. Right now, an F4U-1D (belonging to the 214th Fighter Squadron of the U.S. Marine Corps) is about to land on her.
