The Missouri was the third of the U.S. Navy's Iowa class battleships. Immediately
after her commissioning, she conducted familiarization training off the
coast of New York and combat training in Chesapeake Bay before entering
the waters around Japan. After that, she cruised off the coast of the Japanese
Home islands, supported bombing of the home islands, the invasion of Iwo
Jima and Okinawa, and provided protection for aircraft carriers. On September
2, 1945, after Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, the signing
ceremony of the Instrument of Surrender was held on the Missouri. After
completing her service in World War II and the subsequent Korean War, she
was mothballed for an extended period, but was recommissioned as a Tomahawk
carrier in 1984. On March 31, 1992, after participating in the Gulf War,
she finally ended her 48 years of service and is now preserved as a memorial
ship at Pearl Harbor.
This work depicts a scene from a familiarization exercise conducted by the battleship Missouri in the Atlantic Ocean shortly after her completion. The sight of a high-speed battleship cutting through the waves and navigating the open sea is beautiful, but at the same time, it is a kind of awful sight. The beautifully curved camouflage covering her is a pattern called Major 32 Design 22D, an anti-submarine/anti-surface illusion pattern, and was applied for only five months from June 1944, when the ship was completed. Just prior to her participation in the war against Japan, she was changed to the Major 22 camouflage, in which the top and bottom of the ship are painted in two tones, and the Japanese of the time never saw her as depicted in this work.
