“Stars and Stripes in Tokyo Bay -Battleship USS Missouri 19450902”

The battleship Missouri, named after the 24th state of the U.S., was the third ship of the Iowa class, and the last battleship completed by the U.S. Navy, as it was completed later than the fourth ship, the Wisconsin. On September 2, 1945, after Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, the signing ceremony of the Instrument of Surrender was held on the Missouri.
This work depicts the battleship Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. On board the ship, which is overflowing with crew, stands the Japanese plenipotentiary delegation, including Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, who is attending the signing ceremony of the Instrument of Surrender. At that time, Foreign Minister Shigemitsu participated in this ceremony with the thought that it was not a dishonorable end, but the start of a new beginning for the revitalization of Japan. In order to stage this ceremony as the second opening of Japan to the world, the U.S. chose to anchor the Missouri at approximately the same location as the flagship Pohatan was anchored when the Japan–US Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed, and the 31-star flag that the Pohatan flew was displayed at the spot where the surrender document was signed (note the lower part of the bridge). In her background, numerous Allied naval vessels, including King George V-class battleships, are anchored. Further in the background, Mt. Fuji towers as if watching over the future of Japan.
