「“シスター・サラ” 傷だらけの淑女 −航空母艦 サラトガ 1944−」
“Sister Sara, the Lady with the Scars -Aircraft Carrier USS Saratoga 1944-” 「サラトガ」は、アメリカ海軍のレキシントン級航空母艦の2番艦。ワシントン海軍軍縮条約により、巡洋戦艦から空母へ転用改造されました。「シスター・サラ」の愛称で親しまれ、日米戦では幾度もの被弾に耐え、最初から最後まで戦い抜きました。戦後、ビキニ環礁で行われた原爆実験の標的艦の1隻となり、1946年7月25日のベイカー実験でその艦歴にピリオドを打ちました。
作品は、夜間作戦用空母として慣熟訓練中の同艦をイメージして描いており、1944年のわずかな期間だけ施されたメジャー32/11A迷彩を再現。今まさに、F6F-3N夜間戦闘機が発艦したところです。
The Saratoga was the second of the U.S. Navy's Lexington class aircraft carriers. She was converted from a battle cruiser to an aircraft carrier under the Washington Naval Treaty. She was nicknamed "Sister Sara". In the Pacific War, she endured repeated bombings and fought from the beginning to the end. After the war, she was one of the target ships of the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, and the Baker test on July 25, 1946, ended her naval career.
This work depicts the Saratoga during her familiarization training as an aircraft carrier for night operations. She is very attractive, clad in Major 32/11A camouflage, which was only applied for a short period of time in 1944. An F6F-3N night fighter is just now launching.
