The Fuso class was built in Japan as Super Dreadnought type battleships
exceeding 30,000 tons. As defeat loomed over Japan in the Greater East
Asian War (the Pacific War), the Fuso and Yamashiro participated in Operation
Sho-Go 1, advancing on Leyte Gulf through Surigao Strait. However, the
American fleet waited in ambush, and both ships succumbed to gunnery and
torpedo attacks.
Their high pagoda-like superstructures, which also look like intertwined
trees, gave them the appearance of being unbalanced, and that is how they
are portrayed in this work. The Yamashiro is shown advancing to battle
in the light of the full moon, and the Fuso in the early morning light
of the rising sun. These two works give an impression of “darkness and
light”, “stillness and movement”. These two ships, steaming in line astern
through the sea of death, with their towering superstructures, can be imagined
to look like intertwined trees. Today, they rest on the sea bottom together.
Seventy years after the war, in Heisei 27 (2015), these works were dedicated
to Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. This shrine had shared its patron deity
with the shrines onboard the battleships Fuso and Yamashiro..
