本作品は、「雪風」が戦艦「大和」を旗艦とする第一遊撃部隊の構成艦として、沖縄へ出撃した天一号作戦時のワンシーンを描いたものです。昭和20年４月6日午後3時20分、「大和」は、軽巡「矢矧」他、第四十一、十七、二十一駆逐隊と共に、徳山沖を抜錨。第一遊撃部隊は、沖縄に向け豊後水道を南下します。作品に描かれたシーンは、愛媛県の西端の佐田岬を望みながら航行する「大和」を、「雪風」が面舵を取り距離を取りつつ警戒航行を開始する場面です。いよいよこの後、艦隊は豊後水道を抜け第一警戒航行序列を形成、深島南端2.5海里において140度に変針、敵の潜水艦の活動する海域へと進んでいきます。マストにかかる信号旗は「JJMD」で、「雪風」の艦名符字です。

This work depicts a scene from Operation Ten-Go 1, in which the Yukikaze sailed to Okinawa with the battleship Yamato. At 3:20 p.m. on April 6, 1945, the Yamato and the light cruiser Yahagi lead the 41st, 17th, and 21st Destroyer Division out of Tokuyama. The 1st Strike Force heads south along the Bungo Channel toward Okinawa. The scene depicted in this drawing shows the Yukikaze turning right to steer off Sadamisaki Peninsula at the western end of Ehime Prefecture and beginning a scouting cruise while keeping her distance from the Yamato. After this, the fleet finally passes through the Bungo Channel and forms the first alert navigation order, turning to 140 degrees at 2.5 nautical miles south of Fukashima Island and proceeding into the waters where the enemy submarines are active. On the masts can be seen her call sign "JJMD".
