「瑞鶴」は、大日本帝国海軍の航空母艦の完成形と称される翔鶴型航空母艦の2番艦として建造されました。大東亜戦争では、真珠湾攻撃を始め、珊瑚海海戦、第二次ソロモン海海戦、南太平洋海戦、マリアナ沖海戦などに参加し、空母機動部隊の主力艦として活躍しました。主要な海戦に参加しながら、大きな被害を受けず任務を遂行してきたことから、「幸運艦」「武勲艦」と賞賛されました。昭和19（1944）年10月25日、エンガノ岬沖で繰り広げられた激戦で囮となる任務を達成し、その生涯を終えました。

　作品は、その最後の戦いに先立ち艦内残存機を発艦させる直前の様子を描いたものです。このすぐ後、エンガノ岬沖海戦でアメリカ艦載機の攻撃により沈没しました。「瑞鶴」が没して70周年にあたる平成26（2014）年、毎年 10月25日に「軍艦瑞鶴戦没者並びに物故者慰霊祭」が斎行される橿原神宮に、この作品を奉納しました。

The Zuikaku was the perfection of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s aircraft carrier design, one of two ships of the Shokaku class. In the Greater East Asian War (the Pacific War), she participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Second Battle of the Solomons, battles in the south Pacific, and the Battle of the Marianas, and was one of the main ships of the carrier strike force. Participating in so many battles without sustaining serious damage, she was known as a lucky ship, and an honorable one. On October 25, Showa 19 (1944) as part of the decoy force, she met her end in a furious fight off Cape Engano.

This work shows her just prior to launching her few remaining planes before battle. Just after that, she was attacked by American aircraft and sunk. On October 25, Heisei 26, (2014), on the 70th anniversary of her sinking, this work was dedicated to Kashihara Jingu Shrine, which is home to a monument commemorating the Zuikaku.
